From giving Bollywood some of its best musical hits – from Mission Kashmir to Rock On!! to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – to carving a niche for television jingles in the 2000s, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have been a musical force to reckon with. And they seem to be in no mood to stop. We caught up with the trio recently as they launched Mirchi T3, India’s first airport radio, at Terminal 3 of New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, in which they will present a carefully curated list of songs for passengers waiting at the terminal

‘Why can’t we promote a budding musician’s song the same way we do a superstar’s? We need to create alternative platforms for nurturing young talent’

What do you think about the present music scene in India?

Coexistence – and it holds true for all forms of music in India. Vishal-Shekhar and Arijit Singh are two of the great artistes in Bollywood. There is so much musical diversity in the country, but the problem is we sometimes forget to appreciate our classical and folk music. In other parts of the world, there is immense respect for indigenous forms of art and music. Why can’t we promote an upcoming musician’s song the same way we do a superstar’s? We need to create alternative platforms for nurturing young talent. If we showcase new music in a continuous stream on a platform such as Coke Studio, we will get a cache of amazing artists and songs we didn’t even know existed in India.

Any exciting upcoming projects for the trio?

We are working on the sequel to Rock On!!. We are also working on a film to be directed by Vijay Acharya, the director of Dhoom 3. Also, there’s a movie called Mirziya by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra in the pipeline. And that’s just our musical projects!

How will Mirchi T3 benefit new musicians?

There is a lot of talent in the country and not all of them are given the opportunity they deserve. Mirchi T3 can be a platform to showcase this talent. T3 sees an average of 23 million passengers from diverse backgrounds and nationalities every year, and the artistes have a mature, informed audience who will appreciate their music. So there’s an increased chance that new artistes will be recognised.

What is your most memorable airport moment?

Ehsaan: We had just started recording music for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and were in Delhi for a performance. And when we walked into the Delhi airport in the morning, guess who we bumped into? Milkha Singh himself! How cool is that? We spent some quality time chatting with the legend – it really helped us understand the nuances of the film we were composing for.
