The Auto Expo 2016 saw several automobile icons being showcased. Koustabh Dutta lists the four that caught the eye

1. Ford Mustang

The original American muscle car, the Ford Mustang was first seen in 1964. The then VP & GM, Ford Division, Lee Iacocca, had the vision of a car that could seat four, have bucket seats and a floor-mounted gearshifter, found only in niche models. Iacocca wanted to challenge the norm – and the Mustang was conceived. Ever since, the car, named after the wild horses of the American west, has been part of American history, immortalised in films such as Goldfinger, Bullitt and I Am Legend. When the cult car’s hard-top version arrives in India later this year, it will only be available with the monstrous top-spec 5.0-litre V8 engine

2. Nissan GT-R

One of the world’s most revered sportscars, this had humble beginnings, with the first 1957 version – Skyline – pumping out just 58bhp from a 4-cylinder engine. It has since become a menace on the racetrack. In 1966, when Nissan merged with “Prince”, the recipe was simple: put a 160bhp motor, a straight-six engine into a four-door sedan and let it loose on the racetrack. Around 15 years later, an improved GT-R’s prowess at the Australian Touring car racing series led the press to nickname it Godzilla. And the name has stuck ever since. The present-day GT-R can outrun many of the more expensive sportscars.

Jeep

Very few know the Jeep was born out of dire necessity during the Second World War. In 1941, the US Army needed a fast, lightweight vehicle with go-anywhere ability. The need was urgent – it could wait only 49 days for the first prototype. Its call was answered by Bantam, Ford and Willy-Overland, with the last being awarded the contract to manufacture the vehicles. This was how the first Jeep was born – and as war correspondent Ernie Pyle said, “it was as faithful as a dog, as strong as a mule and as agile as a mountain goat.” Jeep will launch the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler Unlimited (image on left) models in India soon.

Chevrolet Camaro

Most of us recall the bright yellow and black autobot Bumblebee from the Transformers movie franchise. But the Camaro’s history goes way beyond. Built as a competitor to the highly successful Ford Mustang, the Camaro is one of the best cars to have come out of General Motors’ factories. The Camaro was introduced in 1966. When asked what Camaro means, GM officials told the press that “Camaros are small, vicious animals that eat Mustangs”. Though it’s not coming to India yet, it was a pleasant sight at the Auto Expo
